Unix/Linux Installation Instructions for Application Package Downloads

1.

Quit Mathematica if it is running. Uninstall the older version of the application package, if present. Click Download to download the compressed application package file.

2.

If the newly downloaded file is an automatic setup executable (.sh), then proceed to Step 3. Otherwise, uncompress the archive. The resulting files should be placed in a folder of the name of the Add On you downloaded. To make Mathematica aware of this folder, you need to place it in Mathematica's path. This is either:

a.

$InstallationDirectory/AddOns/Applications - for all users of the current Mathematica version.

Example: The default $InstallationDirectory for Mathematica 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, and 6.0 on Unix is

/usr/local/Wolfram/Mathematica/x.x

b.

$BaseDirectory/Applications - for all users of Mathematica on the current machine. (Previous versions of Mathematica used $AddOnsDirectory/Applications instead.)

Example: The default $BaseDirectory for Mathematica 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, and 6.0 on Unix is

/usr/share/Mathematica

c.

$UserBaseDirectory/Applications - for just the current user of Mathematica on current machine. (Previous versions of Mathematica used $UserAddOnsDirectory/Applications instead.)

Example: The default $UserBaseDirectory for Mathematica 5., 5.1, 5.2, and 6.0 on Unix is

~/.Mathematica

Note that ~ is your home directory and .Mathematica is a hidden directory.

You may evaluate any of the above global variables ($BaseDirectory, $UserBaseDirectory, etc.) in Mathematica to find out where they point if you are concerned. Finally, after copying the package files to one of the above locations, finish the install with step 7 below.

3.

When the download is complete, extract the file with the sh command.

sh File_Name.sh

If you have trouble extracting the files, please contact Technical Support.

4.

The installer prompts you to specify the directory in which the application package should be installed. Press ENTER to accept the default directory, or type in a new location and then press ENTER.

5.

The installer begins copying files to the top directory you specified. The progress is indicated by a progress bar on the screen.

6.

The installer returns the message “Installation complete.” The application package is now installed and is ready for use.

7.

The next time you start Mathematica, choose Help > Rebuild Help Index. The application package's documentation will then be available in the Help Browser's Add-Ons & Links category.

If you are using Mathematica 6, the next time you start Mathematica, choose Help > Documentation Center. Click the Installed Add-Ons link, and choose the application from the Installed Add-Ons list that appears.
