Windows Installation Instructions for Application Package Downloads

1.

Quit Mathematica if it is running. Uninstall the older version of the application package, if present. Click Download to download the compressed application package file.

2.

The File Download window will appear. Click Save to continue.

3.

When the download is complete, double-click the file icon to extract the file and launch the installer. Click Next to continue. Your system should extract the files for you. If you have trouble extracting the files, please contact Technical Support.

4.

If the newly uncompressed file is an automatic setup executable (.exe), then proceed to Step 5. Otherwise, the extracted files should be placed in a folder of the name of the Add On you downloaded. To make Mathematica aware of this folder, you need to place it in Mathematica's path. This is either:

a.

$InstallationDirectory\AddOns\Applications - for all users of the current Mathematica version.

Example: The default $InstallationDirectory for Mathematica 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, and 6.0 on Windows is

C:\Program Files\Wolfram Research\Mathematica\x.x

b.

$BaseDirectory\Applications - for all users of Mathematica on the current machine. (Previous versions of Mathematica used $AddOnsDirectory\Applications instead.)

Example: The default $BaseDirectory for Mathematica 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, and 6.0 on Windows is

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Mathematica

Note that the Application Data directory is usually hidden. To see it, in a Windows Explorer click Tools > Folder Options, click the View tab and make sure the “Show hidden files and folders” option is enabled.

c.

$UserBaseDirectory\Applications - for just the current user of Mathematica on the current machine. (Previous versions of Mathematica used $UserAddOnsDirectory/Applications instead.)

Example: The default $UserBaseDirectory for Mathematica 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, and 6.0 on Windows is

C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Application Data\Mathematica

Again, the Application Data file is usually hidden. To see it, enable “Show hidden files” as indicated above.

You may evaluate any of the above global variables ($BaseDirectory, $UserBaseDirectory, etc.) in Mathematica to find out where they point if you are concerned. Finally, after copying the package files to one of the above locations, finish the install with step 10 below.

5.

The Welcome to Setup dialog box appears. Click Next to continue.

6.

The Installation Options dialog box appears. Choose one of the following installation options.

a.

Anyone who uses this computer (all users). This installation option will make the application package available to all users. You will need to have administrative privileges in order to use this installation option.

b.

Only for me (your domain). This installation option will make the application package available to the current user only.

7.

The Choose Destination Location dialog box appears. The path to the default directory is shown.

Click Browse to choose another installation location, if necessary. Make sure the folder you wish to browse is not hidden. Click Next to continue.

8.

The Start Copying Files dialog box appears. Click Back to review and modify your settings. Click Next when you are ready to begin copying files.

9.

A screen appears when the installation is complete. Click Finish to quit the installer. The application package is now ready to use.

10.

The next time you start Mathematica, choose Help > Rebuild Help Index. The application package's documentation will then be available in the Help Browser's Add-Ons & Links category.

If you are using Mathematica 6, the next time you start Mathematica, choose Help > Documentation Center. Click the Installed Add-Ons link, and choose the application from the Installed Add-Ons list that appears.
