Installing an Application Package with Mathematica 4

In Mathematica 4.2 and later, the default installation location is specified by $AddOnsDirectory/Applications. However, in Mathematica 4.1 and earlier, $AddOnsDirectory does not exist. The default installation location for Version 4.1 and earlier is instead specified by $TopDirectory/AddOns/Applications.

Use the following steps to change the installation location so that your application package will work with your version of Mathematica.

To install or move an application package to $TopDirectory/AddOns/Applications
1.

Evaluate the command $TopDirectory in a notebook, and take note of the directory location given.

2.

Quit Mathematica. If the application is installed on your computer, move the application to $TopDirectory/AddOns/Applications and go to step 8.

3.

Mount the CD if necessary. You may need to have administrative privileges to mount the CD. A list of typical mount commands for various systems is given at http://support.wolfram.com/mathematica/systems/unix/general/mountingcd.html.

4.

Change directories to /cdrom/Unix/Installer.

# cd /cdrom/Unix/Installer

5.

Run ./AppInstaller.

# ./AppInstaller

6.

Choose the installation directory. Enter $TopDirectory/AddOns/Applications and press Enter.

7.

The installer returns the message “Installation complete”. The application package is now installed and ready for use.

8.

Each user must rebuild the Help Index by choosing Help > Rebuild Help Index the next time Mathematica is used. Help for the application will then appear in the Help Browser's Add-ons category.
