Installing an Application Package with Mathematica 4.2

The preferred installation location for Mathematica 4.2 is specified by $AddOnsDirectory\Applications. You can find the location of $AddOnsDirectory on your machine by evaluating the command $AddOnsDirectory in a notebook.

Some older application packages will install in the old default directory, $TopDirectory\AddOns\Applications. You can find the location of $TopDirectory on your machine by evaluating the command $TopDirectory in a notebook. Although an application package installed in $TopDirectory\AddOns\Applications will probably function normally, you should install it in either the Applications or Autoload subdirectory of $AddOnsDirectory in order to optimize performance.

To install an application package in $TopDirectory
1.

Evaluate the command $AddOnsDirectory in a notebook, and take note of the directory location given.

2.

Quit Mathematica. Uninstall the application package if it is already installed on your computer. For more information about uninstalling application packages, see Uninstalling Application Packages.

3.

Insert the application CD.

4.

The application CD window will appear. Click Install application to a hard disk.

If the application CD window does not appear, the CD autorun feature might be disabled on your machine. To install the application, double-click the CD-ROM drive icon, open the PC folder, and double-click the AppInstaller icon.

5.

The “Welcome to AppInstaller” window appears. Click Next to continue.

6.

The installer attempts to detect all installed versions of Mathematica. Click Browse. Make sure that the folder you are browsing to is not hidden. Select $AddOnsDirectory\Applications or $AddOnsDirectory\Autoload as the installation directory and click OK.

Click Next when you are ready to begin copying files.

7.

A screen appears when the installation is complete. Click OK to quit the installer. The application package is now installed and ready for use.

8.

Rebuild the Help Index by choosing Help > Rebuild Help Index the next time you start Mathematica. Help for the application will then appear in the Help Browser's Add-ons category.
