How do I avoid the LinkObject::linkw : LinkObject[TIFF.exe, 2, 2] is closed; attempt to write failed error message when writing large image files on the Macintosh platform?

When writing large image files, such as a TIFF or JPEG, using commands like ImageWrite, it may be necessary to increase the preferred memory in the following files.

For example, if you receive the LinkObject::linkw : LinkObject[TIFF.exe, 2, 2] is closed; attempt to write failed when attempting to write a TIFF, you would want to increase the preferred memory to the following file.

Mathematica 4.0 Files:System Files:Converters:Binaries:PowerMac:TIFF.exe

If you received this message when writing a JPEG, you would want to increase the preferred memory for the JPEG's respective executable file.

Mathematica 4.0 Files:System Files:Converters:Binaries:PowerMac:JPEG.exe
