How do I update the front end and kernel executables during an upgrade to Mathematica 4?

If you upgrade Mathematica® from Version 3 to Version 4 using the following method recommended in Section 3.2 of Mathematica 4.0 System Administrator’s Guide,

# ./MathInstaller -auto -dir directory

(where directory is the location of the Version 3 installation), then only part of the upgrade will complete.

As a work around for this problem, take one of the following steps when installing Version 4.

Install Version 4 into a new directory.

Run the interactive installer by executing the following command.

# ./MathInstaller

Move or delete the Version 3 installation manifest in SystemFiles/Installation/SystemResources/Manifests/installation.
