How do I fix the Error type 160 message that prevents the Mathematica front end from launching?

A few users have reported that they are unable to launch the Mathematica 4.0.1 front end. Attempting to do so results in an Error type 160 message. This problem has been isolated to some damaged system fonts that do not appear to affect any other applications. In every case so far, reinstalling the system fonts resolves the problem.

If you receive this error message and reinstalling the system fonts does not resolve the problem, please contact Technical Support directly.
