Why am I having installation problems over my AppleShare network?

A bug in the 10.0.x version of the Finder causes copy errors to occur when drag-copying the Mathematica bundle from a volume that is mounted over an AppleShare network. The error dialog says, “The operation cannot be completed because an item with the name 'Kernel' already exists” or “The operation cannot be completed because an item with the name 'Master.m' already exists.” This problem does not occur in Mac OS X version 10.1 and later.

Workarounds

Install Mathematica 4.1.5 directly from the CD.

Remount the volume using NFS rather than AppleShare.

Copy Mathematica 4.1.5 over AppleShare using the terminal or some other file utility application instead of the Finder.

Due to this and additional intermittent problems with AppleShare in Mac OS X version 10.0.x, Wolfram Research currently does not recommend installing Mathematica 4.1.5 over AppleShare.
