How do I reboot Windows 95 or 98 in Safe Mode?

Windows 95

Windows 95 can be booted in Safe Mode in one of two ways.

Method 1

1.

Restart the machine.

2.

Wait until the memory check is complete, then hold down the F8 key.

3.

A menu of choices should appear. Select the choice for Safe Mode.

Method 2

1.

Restart the machine in MS-DOS mode.

2.

Enter the following command at the DOS prompt.

win /d:m

Windows 98

Windows 98 can be booted in Safe Mode as follows:

1.

Restart the machine.

2.

Hold down the CTRL key as soon as text appears on the screen during the boot. Keep holding CTRL until the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu appears.

3.

Select the third choice in the menu to boot in Safe Mode.

Effects of Booting in Safe Mode

Booting in Safe Mode installs only the keyboard, mouse, and standard VGA drivers to your system. All other startup items will be bypassed. This helps to avoid potential conflicts on your system while diagnosing problems.

When correctly booted in Safe Mode, all four corners of the screen will be labeled with the phrase “Safe Mode”.

The appearance of the screen may be less than optimal while running in Safe Mode since only the standard VGA display driver is loaded.
