How do I address startup problems after upgrading from Mathematica 3.0 to Mathematica 4.0?

When upgrading Mathematica 3.0 to Mathematica 4.0, there may be problems with the installation of the Math fonts that can cause startup errors. For example,

http://support.wolfram.com/mathematica/systems/windows/nt/startupfonts.html

You should do the following.

Delete all the Math* fonts in the Fonts Control Panel (using the Fonts applet in Control Panel).

Using a command prompt window and not an Explorer window, look in the system font directory and verify that all math*.ttf files have been removed.

Reboot the machine.

Using the Fonts applet in Control Panel, install the Math* fonts in C:\Program Files\Wolfram Research\4.0\SystemFiles\Fonts\Windows. (Be sure to select the Copy fonts to Fonts folder option.)
