Using the Mathematica Batch Registration Utility These instructions explain how to use the Batch Registration Utility. The Utility allows you to gather the necessary Mathematica registration information for a large number of machines and then register that information with Wolfram Research. QUICK START 1. If you downloaded the MathID Collector from the web, copy it to a floppy diskette. 2. Insert the floppy diskette on the machine where you wish to install Mathematica. 3. Double-click the MathID Collector icon. 4. A dialog box appears, asking if you wish to append the MathID to the files mathid.txt and submit.html. Click "Append". 5. Remove the floppy and continue to the next machine. Perform steps 2 through 4 for each machine. 6. Either email the file mathid.txt with your license number, name, department, email address, phone number, and the location where these passwords are needed; or use the form submit.html to send the information over the web. The passwords will be sent to your site administrator. COMPLETE INSTRUCTIONS If you downloaded the registration utility from the web, copy the file to a floppy diskette. If you received your diskette directly from Wolfram Research, you should already have the necessary file. The file on the diskette is: -MathID Collector. The batch registration utility program. For each machine on which the program is run, it collects a special identification number that is unique to that machine, the MathID. This number is useful only to Wolfram Research and is necessary for Wolfram Research to generate a password for that machine. This utility generates: -mathid.txt. An ASCII file constructed by the batch registration program. As MathIDs are collected, they are appended to this file. When you start the registration utility, this file is also searched to verify whether a MathID has already been generated for the given machine. Duplicate mathids are not appended. -submit.html. An HTML file. As MathIDs are appended to the ASCII file, they are inserted in this file, which can then be used to send the information to Wolfram Research through the web. 1. Perform the following steps on each machine where you wish to install Mathematica. a. Insert the floppy diskette. b. Double-click the Batch Registration Utility. c. A dialog box appears with the MathID. You are asked if you wish to append the MathID to the file mathid.txt and update the HTML form submit.html. Click "Append" to append the MathID to this file and also the HTML form. The program then exits. If the MathID is already present in the file mathid.txt, you are only allowed to quit. The necessary information is already present in both files. d. Remove the floppy and continue to next machine. 2. After you have performed these steps on every machine that requires a Mathematica password, you must send the registration information to Wolfram Research. You may send it by email or through the web. a. To send this information by email, send a text message to register@wolfram.com. Be sure to include: -your license number -the location (lab or facility) where these passwords are needed -your name -your department -your email address -your phone number -the entire file mathid.txt b. To send this information through the web, start your browser and open the file submit.html. The MathIDs should already be present in the appropriate text field. Fill the other fields with: -your license number -the location (lab or facility) where these passwords are needed -your name -your department -your email address -your phone number After you have filled all the text fields, click the button "Connect to Wolfram Research". 3. An email message will be sent to the site administrator. The email contains one Mathematica password for each submitted MathID. Save all the passwords into one text file and call it mathpass. 4. Install Mathematica on one of the machines. When you are asked to give the password, you may simply continue the installation without giving a password. This will cause a warning message, but you may continue the installation. 5. Copy the file mathpass and place it within the main Mathematica directory, to :Configuration:Licensing:mathpass. 6. Copy this installation of Mathematica to all other machines. Now, when Mathematica is started on any machine, it will search the mathpass file on the local machine for the correct password. ADDITIONAL NOTES The following notes are suggestions on the uses of the Batch Registration Utility. When using the Registration Utility for several laboratories, make a copy of the diskette for each laboratory and label as appropriate. After running the utility on each machine in a laboratory, copy the data files mathid.txt and submit.html into a lab-specific folder or diskette as a backup. The registration utility may be run from a central server. In this situation, MathID Collector should be placed in a folder so that the files mathid.txt and submit.html will be generated and placed in the same folder. You may then run MathID Collector from this server and have the MathIDs appended to the files.
