How do I fix the file access problem in webMathematica 1.0.0 and 1.0.0.1 (images servlet)?

The images servlet can be used to serve content outside of the webMathematica web application. For a default installation this will only serve image files and hence does not present a severe risk. Nonetheless, it may be a good idea to upgrade your installation if you use this servlet.

Note that for a default installation into a servlet container that supports web applications such as Apache Tomcat, this servlet is not used. You may still wish to update the images.class file in your Mathematica application.

Solution

Replace your images servlet with a new one available from http://support.wolfram.com/archive/webmathematica/files/images.class. The new servlet can be installed as described below.

Installation

For Apache JServ, the images.class file is installed into the directory in which servlets are located, as specified in the properties file. On Windows a typical location would be:

C:\Program Files\Wolfram Research\Mathematica\4.1\AddOns\Applications\MSP\SystemAdditions\Servlets

while on Linux/Unix a typical location would be:

/usr/local/mathematica/AddOns/Applications/MSP/SystemAdditions/Servlets

After installing the new images.class you should restart your server.
