Why am I experiencing problems with the webMathematica's initial request?

Under certain configurations, there is a problem with the initial request that launches the Mathematica session. This problem manifests itself in that the client does not appear to be terminated correctly. Since the connection can be terminated manually and the Mathematica sessions are reused many times, the problem is not very visible.

We have found this to be a common problem with Linux configurations running both Apache with mod_jserv and with Tomcat. It is not a problem with Windows NT configurations. It is also not found with Apache with mod_jk using the ajp13 protocol to communicate with Tomcat.
