Why does Mathematica return “–Graphics–” instead of an image?

Certain Preferences settings cause Mathematica to return the text “–Graphics–” instead of an image.

To fix these settings in Mathematica 11.0.1 or earlier:

  1. Open the Preferences dialog. (On Windows and Linux, navigate to Edit ► Preferences. On Mac, navigate to Mathematica Preferences or Wolfram Desktop Preferences.)
  2. Click the Evaluation tab.
  3. Adjacent to “Format type of new output cells,” click the drop-down menu.
  4. Change the value to StandardForm.
