Why does Mathematica 4.2 crash my Intel-Mac machine?

We have been investigating several reports of conflicts between Mathematica 4.2 and the Security Update 2006-003 (Intel) for Intel-Mac machines. Our Software Quality Assurance team has found that launching Mathematica 4.2, Mathematica Teacher's Edition 1.1, or Publicon 1.0.1 on Intel-Mac machines with this security update will cause the machine to freeze. You will need to shut down the machine with the power button and start it again in order to recover.

We have communicated this conflict to Apple. Apple has since released QuickTime 7.1.1 which corrects this problem. If you are still having difficulties running Mathematica 4.2, please download and install this QuickTime update.
