Are there any known problems with Mathematica and System 7.1.2?

The initial release of Mathematica 3.0 for the Macintosh does not work with System 7.1.2 and virtual memory enabled. The common error message when you start the front end is as follows.

The stretchable character 0xf3a7 in the Math2Mono font (size 12) has a repeating piece (0x2b) that is zero size.

Our developers are aware of this problem, but no fix is yet available. The only two workarounds are:

Disable virtual memory

1.

Open the Memory control panel.

2.

Select Off for virtual memory.

3.

Delete the the following folder.

System Folder:Preferences:Mathematica:3.0:FrontEnd

4.

Restart your Macintosh.

Upgrade your operating system

If you upgrade your operating system to System 7.5 or higher, Mathematica 3.0 will be able to run with virtual memory enabled.
