Why do my CTRL-[num] keyboard shortcuts no longer work?

In Mathematica 6, CTRL-[1] inserts a new graphic object and CTRL-[2] inserts a SqrtBox object into your selected notebook window. However, Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) defines CTRL-[1] through CTRL-[4] to select windows in spaces and masks Mathematica's definition of these keyboard shortcuts.

To revert these keystrokes to use Mathematica's default behavior follow these instructions:

1.

Open the System Preferences.

2.

Click the Exposé & Spaces icon.

3.

When the Exposé & Spaces dialog appears, select the Spaces tab.

4.

At the bottom, you will find a drop-down menu titled To switch directly to a space.

5.

Our recommendation is to change this from using CTRL to OPTION. Both the CTRL and APPLE keys have useful associated shortcuts in Mathematica.

Once you make this change, Mathematica's CTRL-[1] and CTRL-[2] keyboard shortcuts will work as expected.
