Why is Mathematica running in 32-bit mode rather than 64-bit?

Intel Based Macintosh

Please note that this is no longer an issue in Mathematica 6.0.2 for OS X.

Prior to the release of Mac OS X 10.4.10, a bug existed in the 64-bit environment of Mac OS X on Intel-based systems that prevented the 64-bit version of Mathematica from opening more than 16 files at the same time and caused Mathematica to crash. Much of the new technology in Mathematica 6, such as integerated data sources, exposes this issue in Mac OS X. As a result Mathematica 6 shipped with the 64-bit version installed, but disabled.

If you have updated your 64-bit Intel Mac to Mac OS X 10.4.10, then you can enable the 64-bit version of Mathematica as follows:

1.

Control-click Mathematica.app and select “Show Package Contents”.

2.

Navigate to the Mathematica.app/Contents/MacOS folder.

3.

Rename MathKernel to MathKernel32 to disable the 32-bit kernel.

4.

Then rename MathKernel64 to MathKernel to enable the 64-bit kernel.

32-bit Intel Macs are not affected by this problem.

PowerPC G5 Macintosh

64-bit support for the PowerPC G5 has been discontinued with Mathematica 6. We continue to support the PowerPC G5 with the 32-bit version of Mathematica for Mac OS X.
