Why do I experience problems with the fonts when switching languages in Mac OS X?

If Mathematica and Mac OS X are originally in one language and are then switched to another language, both the Mathematica and OS X Help menus may remain in the original language or appear with garbled fonts.

For example, this problem will occur if Mac OS X and Mathematica are originally set to the Japanese language. If you decide to change to the English mode, you will have to change the language setting in the Option Inspector, quit Mathematica, and then change to the English mode of the operating system. Changing to English in the operating system will require you to log out and log back in. When logging back in and starting Mathematica, you may notice that both Mathematica and the Help menu may still appear with Japanese or garbled fonts.

To correct this problem, you must go into the Option Inspector and reset the language.

1.

Start Mathematica and select Mathematica > Preferences to open the Option Inspector. Verify that Show option values for is set to global.

2.

Once inside the Option Inspector, select Global Options → International Options and change the Language to the language now being used by Mac OS X.

For the aforementioned example, you would set Language from Japanese to English.
