Why won't Mathematica generate graphics when I evaluate a plotting command in the Kernel command line interface?

Although this does work in some versions of Mathematica, this method of creating graphics is not supported. 64-bit platforms such as Compaq Tru64 are known to have this feature disabled and will generate errors such as the following.

The supported method for creating graphics is to use Mathematica's notebook interface, also known as the Front End.
