What does the message Error: The installer was unable to check for a valid password file mean?

After the Mathematica files are installed, the installer for Unix or Linux attempts to launch the Mathematica kernel to obtain the computer's MathID number for the password-entry phase of installation. This message is printed if the installer is unable to launch the kernel.

Launching the kernel directly, with the math script in an xterm window will usually give a diagnostic message about the cause of the failure to launch. Frequently, the cause is covered by one of the Technical Support FAQs found in the following locations.

http://support.wolfram.com/mathematica/systems/unix/

The installer message usually includes the path to a file named InstallErrors. This file can have very useful information on the cause of the problem.
