Why am I having font problems with SunOS 4.1.3 (or earlier) running OpenWindows?

If you are on a SunOS 4.1.3 or earlier machine and you are running OpenWindows, you may get some strange errors when trying to start the front end from the mathematica script. In most cases, the front end starts up, but the fonts are displayed incorrectly.

To fix this problem, you will need to install the News version of the fonts. Please see the following page for more information.

You will also need to edit the mathematica script to search News. For example, if you have Mathematica installed in /usr/local/mathematica and you have the News fonts installed in /usr/local/mathematica/SystemFiles/Fonts/News, then your mathematica script will look as in the following URL.
