Adminstrative (Manual Install) of Mathematica for Windows

This is the (unsupported) way to do an administrative install. It is intended for site administrators to create a network image of the Mathematica layout on a network server for easy deployment to multiple machines. An adminstrative installation will place the Mathematica layout into the default installation directory and make the MathLink DLL files and Font files available for you to place manually. You will also need to create your own shortcuts. Please note that there will be no record of Mathematica in the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel.

These instructions assume that you are installing from a CD.

1.

At a command prompt, change into the directory on the CD containing the setup.exe for Windows. For example, say your CD drive is E:.

C:\> E:

E:\> cd windows\

If you tried installing from a download, the installer executable would have been copied into a folder in the C:\Program Files\Wolfram Research\Downloads directory. Please check the following directory for setup.exe (the name of this directory is dependent on the exact type and version of Mathematica you have).

C:\Program Files\Wolfram Research\Downloads\M-WIN-P 6.0.0 850979

2.

Run the setup program in administrative install mode by executing the following command.

\.setup /a

The following Wizard will appear. Click Next.

Splash Screen

InstallShield Wizard

3.

Select Network Location. The default installation path will be appended to whatever you enter here. It is recommended that you leave this C:.

4.

Click Install. Please note that there will be no progress dialog box (i.e., it will appear to freeze). But you should notice that your computer's hard drive is working.

5.

Click Finish.

Installer Dialog Box

6.

Install system files and fonts. The installation will have placed the following files in C: (or whatever you entered as the network location):

a.

C:\Fonts contains the Mathematica fonts. Copy the fonts into C:\Windows\Fonts.

b.

C:\System32 contains the MathLink DLL files. Copy the DLLs into C:\Windows\System32.

7.

Create shortcuts.

a.

Go to the Start menu, right-click All Programs, and select Open All Users.

b.

In the opened folder window, double-click Programs and create a Mathematica x.x subfolder.

c.

Create shortcuts to Mathematica.exe and MathKernel.exe.

8.

Clean up unnecessary files by deleting the following:

a.

C:\Fonts

b.

C:\System32

c.

C:\Mathematica 5.2.msi
