Wolfram Computation Meets Knowledge

How do I set up the Wolfram Engine on Linux?

To run the Wolfram Engine on your machine, you need to get a free license, install the program, then activate the product.

You need a Wolfram ID to activate the Wolfram Engine. If you do not have one already, you must create one.

If you are connecting to the internet via a proxy server, wolframscript needs suitable proxy information in order to be able to activate the Wolfram Engine. wolframscript uses the operating system’s proxy settings, which, for example, can be set by executing (in a terminal):

export https_proxy=https://your.proxy.server:port/

Setup Instructions

  1. Quit any Wolfram products that are running on your machine.
  2. In a web browser, visit https://www.wolfram.com/engine.
  3. From the drop-down menu, select the version that you want to download and click the red Start Download button. The installation script will be downloaded to the default downloads folder for your browser, and the Thank You page appears.
    Thank You Page
  4. Click the red Get Your License button.
  5. If prompted, sign in with your Wolfram ID and password. The Free Developer License Agreement page appears. Read the Free Wolfram Engine for Developers Terms and Conditions of Use and select the checkbox to agree.
  6. Click the Get License button. The license for the Wolfram Engine is created and associated with your Wolfram ID.
  7. Open a terminal and change the directory to where the installer is located. For example, if the installer is located in your Downloads folder, run:
     cd Downloads

This changes the directory to your Downloads folder. If you wish to verify that the installer file is in this folder, use the command ls.

  8. The installer needs administrative privileges to run. Use the command sudo to run the installer script. For example, if the installer is called “installer.sh”, run:
    sudo bash installer.sh

sudo asks you to enter the administrative password on the machine. After providing the administrative password, the installer starts and the Installation Directory prompt appears.
