Can I use Mathematica offline?
Read this article in: Español, Português
Yes, once you have installed the Wolfram app locally on your machine and activated Mathematica, it is a standalone application and can be used without an internet connection. However, some of its functionality requires internet access:
- Wolfram|Alpha calls such as free-form inputs, entities or data functions.
- Wolfram Cloud–related functions such as CloudDeploy, FormFunction or APIFunction.
- Resource-related functions such as ResourceFunction, ResourceData or NetModel.
- Network-related functions such as URLRead, WebExecute or HTTPRequest.
- Wolfram Notebook Assistant + LLM Kit.
- Any additional resources that require internet access for their initial download.
To determine whether your function of interest is affected, uncheck the “Allow the Wolfram System to access the Internet” box in Edit > Preferences > Internet & Mail (Wolfram > Settings > Internet & Mail on macOS) and try using it again.
We recommend connecting to the internet periodically to ensure your Mathematica installation is updated regularly.
