To use Chat Notebooks or other LLM-related functionality in Wolfram products, you need an active subscription with an LLM service provider.
These can be:
- Wolfram Notebook Assistant + LLM Kit
- OpenAI
- Anthropic
- Gemini
- Aleph Alpha
- Cohere
- DeepSeek
- Groq
- Mistral AI
- Together AI
- Any LLM locally installed on your machine
We recommend Wolfram’s LLM Kit as it provides the most suitable individual model for each of Wolfram Language’s built-in LLM functions and includes Wolfram Notebook Assistant for LLM-based Wolfram Language coding and problem solving assistance.
Wolfram LLM Kit
- Subscribe to Wolfram Notebook Assistant + LLM Kit.
- Follow these set up steps.
LLM Kit is now set up for you.
Other LLM Service Providers
To use Chat Notebooks or other LLM-related functionality in Wolfram products with an external service provider, you need to:
- Create an account with a supported chat & generative model service provider,
- Provide your payment information on their platform if necessary,
- Generate an API key on their API platform and
- Save this API key to your desktop or cloud Wolfram product.
Please note that the service providers typically charge for each API call.
Creating an account with the service provider
- Go to the service provider’s website from the list above.
- Follow any indicated steps to create your account.
Setting up your payment information with the service provider
Most providers offer free use of their services within specified limits. Using their services beyond these limits typically requires setting up a billing plan and providing them with your payment information. For details, please consult the providers’ respective pages.
Adding a service provider API key to your Wolfram desktop product
- Navigate to the menu item Edit ► Preferences and click AI Settings. Select the Notebooks tab.

- Click the red “Go to (service provider)” button, where “(service provider)” is the service provider you selected.
- In your service account, create a new API key.
-
Copy the new API key and paste it into the API Key field in the WolframConnector dialog. Choose “Save this connection” if you would like to reuse this key in the future.
-
Click the “Agree and Continue” button.
You can now start using Chat Notebooks and other LLM-related functionality.
To enter a different API key, repeat steps 2 through 8.
